Before delving into the future, let's take a moment to reflect on 2023, as the current context of technology development can provide us with interesting insights into predictions for 2024.   According to Ilona Alieksieieva, Business Development Director at Naviparking, we can highlight two main tendencies that were visible in the smart city sector in 2023.   The first one was related to digital solutions. In 2023, they were more and more powered by AI and blockchain technologies. Additionally, future city stakeholders were adapting and redesigning solutions to decrease carbon footprint–and partly, AI was going to support this as well, she says.    It’s also worth noting that digitization has not only been a source of success and improvement in everyday life. It also set specific challenges.    When it comes to disappointing trends, I would name the same AI and data collection, admits Ilona Alieksieieva. Why? Because collecting data is only the first step, we should understand how we can use it, she says. Not every digital solution is smart. And sometimes we are running in the direction of digitization of all processes, without thinking will it make the solution really smart in the end.  

Smart Cities are waiting for 2024. What can we expect? 

Let's acknowledge the obvious: the only certainty we have is uncertainty. Various shifts in the global economy and politics can usher in significant changes in people's technological needs and present diverse dilemmas and challenges. We will continue to closely monitor the evolution of transportation hubs, micro-mobility, automation, citizen engagement through technology, and endeavors for sustainable growth via smart solutions.   Although cloudification, blockchain technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) are not novelties, we will observe their continuous development in the urban landscape every year.    In the smart city sector, AI is already widely used for urban planning and data analysis, and this is definitely a growing trend. What is the crucial part of a smart city is not only collecting data but using it in an efficient way, explains Ilona Alieksieieva, Business Development Director at Naviparking.    A similar case will occur with many other trends. The hunger for bandwidth and seamless connectivity pushed the boundaries of digital transformation. In addition to biophilic design principles and wellness technologies, smart buildings in 2024 are also integrating advanced climate control systems that regulate temperature and humidity levels to enhance comfort and productivity. These buildings incorporate sensors and AI algorithms to analyze environmental data and adjust conditions accordingly, ensuring optimal thermal comfort for occupants throughout the day.
